Since its original inception in 1924, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has encountered deep division among the very women it is intended to protect. During the 1970s, the ERA battle reached its peak as leaders of the National Organization of Women (NOW) encountered fierce opposition from Phyllis Schlafly and her STOP ERA campaign. Their heated exchanges brought about the ultimate defeat of the ERA, despite its overwhelming support.
